"Alive" was Pearl Jam's first single from the band's debut album, Ten, released in 1991. It was written by guitarist Stone Gossard,
The song started out as an instrumental titled, "Dollar Short." The band included it on a demo tape and circulated it in hopes of finding a lead singer. Vocalist Eddie Vedder received a copy of the tape and wrote lyrics for the song. Vedder described a fictionalized incident when he was told that the man he thought was his father was not his biological parent.
"Alive" reached number 16 in the UK. The single was not released in the US. Remixed versions of the song were included on Pearl Jam's 2004 greatest hits album and the 2009 Ten reissue. “Alive” is still a fan favorite and a regular on rock radio. It is also one of the most requested songs at the band's concerts.
