NY Artist Transforms Music into Modern Art Images Through Near-Death Experience

NEW YORK (June 4, 2009) – Erik Rosen, a New York artist, discovered how to translate music into Modern Art during a near-death experience. The Durst Organization will feature Erik’s interpretation of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and Bob Dylan’s “Positively 4th Street,” among others, at the Conde Nast Lobby Gallery, 4 Times Square, New York from June 15th through July 20th.
How it happened…
While in the depths of a stem cell transplant to treat lymphoma, Erik experienced “synesthesia” – a condition in which the senses misfire. For example, people feel odors, taste color or see sound. In Erik’s case, he saw the music emanating from his stereo. The songs revealed themselves as brightly colored rectangles on his hospital wall.
After his experience, Erik created a platform to transform musical notes into a visual image, or a cNOTE™. A cNOTE is comprised of a group of rectangles, each representing a note of a song. The color of the rectangle is determined by the pitch of the note, while the width represents the note’s duration. By arranging the rectangles in a linear form, it creates a song. It is music reflected in a picture. Any song can be transformed into a cNOTE.
